During the performance of their daily work, care workers see all sorts of things, ranging from problems that arise to opportunities for improvement. By communicating about this, the team can function better, better care can be provided and potential problems can be prevented. The same applies to patients: they too have unique information. By communicating their preferences, expectations and ideas to their healthcare provider, better treatment decisions can be made. In short, it is important that people in healthcare have their voices heard. Yet many parties, such as patients, newly graduated care providers and personal healthcare assistants, find this difficult. I am investigating why this is the case and how we can encourage them to make themselves heard.
